Every few weeks I find myself hanging out with people I may or may not have met before, playing board games that I may or may not have played before. That’s the cool thing about meetups and the board game renaissance!
Everyone played board games when they were children (at least, I hope so). For some reason, many of us just outgrow them during our teenage years. We got bored with Monopoly, Clue, and Life. What many people may not realize is that there’s a large variety of, fun tabletop games that have come out in the last few years. From card-based to intricate models, futuristic Ameritrash or medieval Euro, 10-minute puzzles to hours-long monstrosities involving a phone app, game makers have gotten very creative, and there’s bound to be something for everyone.
There are some excellent places to go in Seattle for tabletop gaming (another reason to love Seattle!) and one of the West Seattle Board Game Meetup’s favorite locations is Meeples. It’s a small, simple game store on the second floor of a business complex on California Avenue. Meeples sells a ton of games, but also has a few tables and a café with a couple of taps (one cider, a couple of beers) in the back. The menu is not extensive, but it’s creative.
My most favorite sandwich from here–and possibly ever– is the Brie Apple Pesto. It contains exactly what it’s named, and the combination is superb. They serve it on wheat or white, on a plate with chips. This is a sandwich leveled up! I’ll often get it with ham for an extra couple dollars, but it’s just as good with no meat.
The rest of Meeples’ cafe menu is full of things like these: typical things with an elegant twist. Putting apples on a sandwich is a brilliant idea; they do it to their PB&J as well. There are many vegetarian options, and some plates to share with your board game group. If you’re not a drinker, they’ve got a decent selection of tea.
There are some gaming places with a more extensive menu or more drink options, which I’ll get to another time. But in West Seattle, Meeples is a solid choice. Play a game or two while enjoying a cider and the brie apple pesto deliciousness. If you’re from around Seattle and want to try it out, let me know and I’ll be happy to meet you there!
