I am a nerd. And a geek. Or both, depending really on how you choose to define them. All I really want from life is to travel and play board games (and maybe play board games while traveling?).
I’ve talked before about how board gaming is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. There are quite a few venues in the greater Seattle area for geeking out and playing games. One such place is Meeples; now I’ll talk about AFK Elixirs & Eatery, which I actually love a little bit more.
AFK (“Away from keyboard,” a common term used in online gaming) actually has two branches in the Seattle area: the original Tavern in Everett, and Elixirs & Eatery in Renton. AFK E&E (the one I frequent since it’s much closer to me) is a rather huge venue divided into three general areas: the bar, where they have happy hour and events like comedy night and karaoke; the cage, where you can play computer games; and the rest of the eatery, where you can have a meal, play games with friends, or both.
The staff at E&E is great, and they have delicious (if slightly pricey) food. The collection of board games that can be borrowed and learned is awesome. But the absolute best thing about E&E? The drinks menu. I mean, with drinks called Still a Better Love Story Than Twilight, Order 66, Polyjuice Potion, and Captain Jack Sparrow, just perusing the Advanced Guide as they call it is so much fun.
One of my favorites is the Fallout, because it’s yummy, and because it looks absolutely amazing. Made of peach schnapps, melon liqueur, grenadine, and Irish cream, no nuclear apocalypse has ever looked or tasted so sweet.
E&E also continues to experiment, and on special occasions, they’ll have drinks using seasonal ingredients (like eggnog during the winter holidays). So even if I’ve had quite a few of the items in the Advanced Guide (over several visits; I’m really not an alcoholic!), they always have the variety to keep me coming back. Plus it’s really just a fun, inclusive environment where you can just chill with friends, or go all out nerdy, or somewhere in the middle.
